  5. monarchy was given command of the army
  6. defending Paris; later he won the battle of
  7. Jemappes, but was defeated at Neerwinden
  8. (Austrian Netherlands) in 1793. After
  9. intriguing with the royalists he had to flee
  10. for his life, and from 1804 he lived in
  11. England.
