1739-1823. French general during the
Revolution. In 1792 he was appointed foreign
minister, supported the declaration of war
against Austria, and after the fall of the
monarchy was given command of the army
defending Paris; later he won the battle of
Jemappes, but was defeated at Neerwinden
(Austrian Netherlands) in 1793. After
intriguing with the royalists he had to flee
for his life, and from 1804 he lived in
England.
